Reading Passport and Formative 2

Dear Students,

Please be informed:

One a half semester has passed. I would like to remind you not to forget reading books and writing your Reading Passport. You have to read 4 English books and 6 Indonesian books. You are free to choose any English book you like, but I do not recommend you to read a comic. The report (Reading Passport) of the English books must be submitted before the 22nd of April 2009. It will be counted as a part of your daily score.

On the last week of April, we are planning to have a trip to Jogyakarta. During the trip, you will have some assignments to do individually that -later on- will be counted as you Formative 2 score. Please make sure that you do it well with your high pride.

What We Learn During 3rd - 6th Week

Dear Grade 7 Students,

During the 3rd - 4th week, we will discuss our past activities.
"English Competition" will be our topic in recount activities. We will discuss whether you have ever joined a competition or not. You will practice some expressions in asking and giving past information related to a competition. You will work in pair and build a dialog which you'll perform in front of class. Later on, you will have to write a recount paragraph about your experience joining a competition.

On the 4th - 5th week, We will have a grammar topic. Tag Questions and Preposition will be our topics these weeks. A handout will be provided for you.

ON the 5th - 6th week you will have your 1st FORMATIVE TEST! Be ready and prepare yourselves. The materials will cover descriptive text, recount text, tag questions and preposition. Good Luck!

Welcome in the 2nd Semester

Dear my lovely grade 7 students,

I welcome you in our 2nd semester! I'm sorry for greeting you late (the internet connection is not good enough, you know that already! ;) )

On the 1st and 3nd week, we will work on descriptive text. We have discussed it on 1st semester, so you have known already the purpose and the structure of a descriptive text.

But, let me remind you!
The purpose of a descriptive text is to describe a particular thing, place, or a person.
The structure contains an identification and a description. In the identification, you identify the thing being described. While, in the description, you tell the details, the specification and characteristics of the thing being described.

You will do a monologue and dialogue activities.

1st -2nd week: Our topic is "A Hotel". You will learn some vocabularies related to a hotel. You will have to find or draw a hotel, pretend you know very well of the hotel and try to describe it vividly. You will have to speak in front of the class, presenting your picture. Later you will write your description.

2nd- 3rd week: Our topic is "I lost my purse!". Here, you learn some vocabularies in describing things. You learn some expressions in asking someone to describe something, and expressions in giving description. You will work with a partner and conduct a role play (conversation) in front of the class. Later you will make a display on things being described.

Well, I have to go now. Time for teaching. 7N is waiting for me :)

The Practice Test for Listening and Speaking Skills will be held during week 8, and assessed by Mr. Texas.

Dear Students,

For your writing tasks, I will give you scores in alphabet. Here is the conversion:

A+ = 95
A = 90
A- = 85
B+ = 80
B = 75
B- = 70
C+ = 65
C = 60
C- = 55
D+ = 50
D = 45
E = 35

The minimum score that you need to achieve in passing English Class is 65.

Rules in English Class

Here is the rules in English class:
1. Attending Class On Time
You are expected to come on time. 5 minutes after the bell, the teacher will lock the door. You need to bring a signed lateness form if you come after the door is locked. Be aware that:
1 - 5 minutes late, you will lose 5 points of your effort score.
6 - 10 minutes late, you will lose 10 points.
more than 10 minutes late, you will lose 5 points and have an additional task to do.
2. Submitting the Tasks On Time
You will have a reduced score if you are late in submitting the assignments.
1 - 3 days late, you will lose 5 points of your score.
4 - 8 days late, you will lose 10 points.
9 - 15 days late, you will lose 15 points.
more than 15 days, you will lose 20 points.
3. Cheating is strictly not allowed.
Cheating during the exam cannot be tolerated. You will lose 100% of your test score.

What You need in my class for this semester

Dear students,
This semester you need to prepare 2 notebooks in my class.
1 notebook is for your own need in taking note during the explanation in class; and 1 notebook is for the assignments this semester.

There are 2 big assignments that you have to do this semester.
a. Pocket Dictionary
b. Weekly Journal / Diary

a. Pocket Dictionary
You have to record new words / difficult words you find in class. Every time you hear or find new words / difficult words during teachers' explanation, in the given handouts, reading texts or in the books you read, please write it down in your notebook. Identify if the word is a verb, an adjective, an adverb or a noun. Find the meaning and write it. Write an example of a sentence where you can apply the word. You can also create a picture describing the word (optional). You are about to record 400 - 500 words this semester. Below is the example of what you have to do:
1. endeavor (v)
meaning: try hard to do something new / difficult
example: The man endeavored in saying the correct something to her.
2. cascade (n)
meaning:waterfall
example: There is a beautiful cascade in the middle of the forest.
Deadline: I will check your progress on the 5th and 8th week. It is to be submitted on the 13th week (27-28 October 2008). You can collect it earlier, but not later.

b. Weekly Journal / Diary
The aim of assigning this task is to build your writing habit. You can write your experience during a week, make it as a diary, or write any story you like. In short word, just express yourselves through words. Just write 1 - 2 paragraphs a week during 11 weeks; if you can write more, that will be great!
Deadline: I will check your progress on the 5th and 8th week. It is to be submitted on the 13th week (29-30 October 2008). You can collect it earlier, but not after the 30th.

Remember, you'll get a reduced score for the lateness you make.
